Year 5

Autumn 1 -  2018

Welcome back!

We hope you and your children have had a lovely summer break and that you are looking forward to the start of the new school year. This year, the Year Five team will consist of Mr Reynolds, Miss Daley and Mr Dean.  We are very excited about all of the units of learning planned for the year and we are sure that your children will continue to demonstrate a positive attitude towards their learning.  Please remember, if you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to talk to us after school. We look forward to meeting with you all!

Unit of Learning:

This half term our unit of learning will focus on the historic civilisation of Ancient Greece. We will be looking at how this civilisation has shaped present day systems and technologies. We will find out about Ancient Greek life, the importance of city states, the origins of the Olympic games and Greek gods and goddesses. At the end of the half term, we will be holding our very own Ancient Greek theme day! We will give you further details nearer the time.

We will be planning lots of exciting trips for the children to enhance their learning of our topics. We will give you more details about the dates of these trips when all plans have been finalised.  It would be great to have lots of parents/carers attending the trips too!l Please speak to the class teacher if you would like to help out with a trip or an activity in school.

English and Maths

In English, we will be focussing on our core text, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. This text links in with our unit of learning perfectly as, during his adventures, Percy Jackson comes into contact with many characters from the Ancient Greek world.

In maths, we will begin with a focus on place value, progressing on to using the four number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Throughout our maths learning, we will be taking on a mastery approach; focusing on developing greater fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. It is vital that the children are practising their spellings and times tables at home as well as reading daily and completing their home learning journals.

All Year 5 children have two P.E. lessons each week.  Please ensure that your child brings their P.E. kit in every Monday.  Their P.E. kit should be left in school until Friday when they can take it home to be washed before returning it on the following Monday.  Children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt (no football shirts) and trainers/plimsols.

Many thanks for your support,

Mr Dean, Miss Daley and Mr Reynolds.
