Year 5

Summer 2 -  2018

Welcome back!

We hope you had a fantastic break. We are all looking forward to the exciting learning we have planned! This half term, we have an exciting enterprise challenge as well as sports day to look forward to.

Unit of Learning:

This half term we will be learning about the life cycles of plants, humans and different animals including birds, mammals, amphibians and insects.  We will be continuing to build on our investigation skills by making careful observations. During the unit we will be researching the work of famous scientists such as David Attenborough.

English

For the first two weeks, we will be learning about memory and how it is affected by ageing. We will be reading the story Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge and writing a memoir from the perspective of the main character. Later in the half term, we will be learning about the Shakespeare text Romeo and Juliet.

Maths

This half term, we will be revisiting and deepening our learning on fractions, decimals and percentages. We will be learning to apply our understanding to a range of problems. As well as this, we will be learning how to balance equations and begin to express numbers as symbols and letters.

Young Enterprisers

This half term the children have an exciting opportunity to take part in a special enterprise task.  The children will be working in small groups to create a business plan with five pounds to invest. Over the next month, they will be operating a business with the aim to make as much profit as possible. Any money raised will be used toward the cost of year six trips. We wish all the children luck with their ventures!

P.E.

This half term, year 5 will have the opportunity to take part in cricket coaching and some dance sessions.  Please ensure that your child brings their P.E kit in every Monday.  Their P.E kit should be left in school until Friday when they can take it home to be washed before returning it on the following Monday.  Children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt and trainers.

Many thanks for your support,

Amy Griffin, Callum Dean, Nichola Daley and Aaron Jelley
