Year 6
Spring 1 - 2018
We hope that you enjoyed the Christmas break and we are now looking forward to what will be another fantastic term at South Rise.
Unit of Learning: Ancient civilisations
This half term we will begin our new unit on Ancient Civilisations, learning about the exciting topic of Ancient Egypt. We will be following the footsteps of Howard Carter by exploring the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and engaging in a debate around the ethics of this and learn about the Ancient Egyptian beliefs on the afterlife and mummification. Later in the half term, the children will have the opportunity to follow their own line of interest and engage in an independent research project, which they will present to their peers. In art, the children will develop their sculpture skills by designing and making death masks and canopic jars.
English and Maths
This half term, our learning will be focused on the William Shakespeare play, Anthony and Cleopatra. The children will be exploring the language of Shakespeare. The final outcome for their learning will be writing and creating an oral news report on the death of Cleopatra!
In Maths, we will be learning about durations of time, reading timetables and analysing statistics. By half term the focus will change to recognising and calculating different angles. Please support your child at home by asking them questions about time and encouraging them to tell the time using both analogue and digital format.
Please encourage your child to log on and use their Lumio account regularly.
PE
Our PE topic for this half term is invasion games. We will be developing our hockey skills and playing small sided games. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school, this should include a change of T-Shirt and suitable trainers. Whilst the weather is cold, the children may wear black, blue or grey jogging bottoms.
