Year 5 Residential School Journey to Townsend Centre in Swanage

5th – 9th October 2015

Our year 5 children had an amazing outdoor learning experience at a The Townsend Residential Centre in Swanage in Dorset earlier this term.

When we arrived at the centre the children were shown to their rooms and given time to unpack and make ourselves at home.   They even had their own bathrooms!

We voted to take a walk around the local area so that we could see the sea!  We promised ourselves we would be back for a paddle!

One of the children’s favourite activities was an exciting night walk to a smuggler’s cave where we learnt about the history of local smugglers and how they hid their loot in some unexpected places!

We challenged ourselves to a five mile walk to Corfe Castle through an ancient woodland and along the burrows.  We saw cows and sheep and even a Red Kite and a Kestrel.  Braving the rain, we took part in a hilarious outdoor drama/storytelling session in the castle, where the children were able to dress up and role play various characters in the story.

Another popular activity was our team building, problem solving activities which challenged us all to think in different ways and to listen carefully to each other.  We built some very detailed models of Corfe Castle which included draw bridges and even a portcullis!

At last the day came for our beach investigation and the children built sand castles, made beach art and had an amazing time splashing around in the sea!

During the week away we all made new friends and learnt new skills as well as challenging ourselves to try new and exciting outdoor activities.

We are all looking forward to our next adventure!
