Year 2

Summer 1 - 2018

Welcome back!

We hope you and your children have had a lovely half term break. We are delighted to be welcoming your children back and hope that they feel enthusiastic about the half term ahead.  We have planned some exciting lessons for the children, to help them with their learning and to prepare them for their assessments in May.

Unit of Learning:  Swings and Roundabouts

This half term we will be looking at our topic of, Swings and Roundabouts.  As part of our learning, the children will visit Manor Park Gardens and Greenwich Park looking closely at the rides and how they work.

Our English lessons will be linked to our topic and the children will be researching fairgrounds and writing their own non-chronological report. We will also be reading   'The Twits' by Roald Dahl and be writing play scripts, character descriptions and instructions.

In Science we will be learning about Sir Isaac Newton and finding out about his life and his findings on forces.

We will continue to build on our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills in Maths

In Science we will be learning about forces.  Our investigations will focus on finding out about what makes things move.

Home Learning

We recognise the importance of learning at home and our Home Learning Journal enables children, parents and teachers to communicate regularly.  We hope that the children are now more confident at recording their reading every week.  We will also be asking the children to make comments about what they have read, their favourite character and how the story made them feel. One of the most important ways to help your child is to listen to them read, but also to read to them. We cannot stress enough the importance of regular reading. We recommend that children read with an adult every evening for about twenty minutes. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day.

Uniform and P.E. kit

Sweatshirts are available to buy from the office and children should wear black or grey trousers or skirts. Please label all items of clothing with your child’s name and support us by ensuring that your child does not wear jewellery, nail varnish or short skirts. For P.E. children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirts and trainers/plimsols.

Year 2 will have P.E. twice a week. It is essential that children bring their PE kit with them on  Mondays and take them home on Fridays.

Many thanks for your support!

To learn more about our sporting hero, Laura (Trott) Kenny, we visited the Lee Valley Velopark. We saw the very track where she won her two gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics. We were very fortunate to see cyclists on the track. One even rode very high up on the steep corner to high five some children!
