Year 2

Summer 2 - 2018

Welcome back!

We hope you have all had a lovely summer break. We are delighted to be welcoming your children back to school and hope that they feel excited about the amazing learning ahead.

Unit of Learning:

This half term we will be looking at our unit of learning called ‘Heroes and Villains’. The children will be investigating the ways we use our imaginations to create new things and express ourselves.

In Science we will be learning about everyday materials.  We will be experimenting with different materials to test their suitability for particular uses.  We will also begin to explore the wider world by learning the seven continents and five oceans.

In English this term we will be focusing our reading and writing around our unit of learning ‘Heroes and Villains’. We will be exploring how our imaginations help us to express ourselves and we will be reading ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to help us.

In maths we will continue to develop our number skills. We will be focusing on place value and our understanding of number. It would be extra helpful if you could practise counting, drawing number representations and the 2, 5 and 10 times tables at home with your child.

Home Learning

We recognise the importance of learning at home and our Home Learning Journal enables children, parents and teachers to communicate regularly. We will also be asking the children to contribute to the home learning journals, making comments about stories, character profiles, and reviews. One of the most important ways to help your child is to read with them and listen to them read. We cannot stress enough the importance of regular reading. We recommend that children read with an adult every evening for about twenty minutes. We would also suggest that you encourage your child to apply their reading skills in everyday situations. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day.

Uniform and P.E. kit

Sweatshirts are available to buy from the office and children should wear black or grey trousers or skirts. Please label all items of clothing with your child’s name and support us by ensuring that your child does not wear jewelry, nail varnish or short skirts. Boys should not have any patterns shaved into their hair.  For P.E children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirts and trainers/plimsols.

Year 2 will have P.E. twice a week. It is essential that children bring their PE kit with them on  Mondays and take them home on Fridays.

Many thanks for your support!

Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a fantastic year for all of your children in Year 2. There is not long left before the end of term and after the summer, when your child returns to school in September, they will join Year 3. We want to take this opportunity to share what we are doing in school to help prepare your child for this transition and some ideas for what you can do at home
