Year 2

Spring 1 - 2018

Welcome back!

We hope you all enjoyed your holidays and spending time relaxing with family and friends. We are looking forward to the new term and we will start our learning straightaway with our new topic:  Vile Victorians.

Unit of Learning:  Vile Victorians

We have been looking forward to this all year!  It’s time to learn about those Vile Victorians!  We have several exciting trips and activities planned.  We will be reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens to help us understand what life was like for some Victorian children and researching clever Victorian inventors and scientists who changed the course of the whole world.

Central Idea

Understanding the past allows us to make sense of the present.

English and Maths

In English, we will be using our Unit of Learning ‘Vile Victorians’ to produce different genres of writing including narrative and non-chronological reports. In Maths this term, we will be having a huge focus on arithmetic. It is vital that the children are confident using mental addition, subtraction multiplication and division. We will also investigate symmetry and right angles in our shape learning as well as simple fractions.

Home Learning

We believe reading at home is an important way of supporting your child with their learning at school. We recommend that children read to an adult every evening for about ten minutes. Please also ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day so they are able to take a range of books home at their book band level.  The children will continue to complete pages in their Maths and Reading home learning books. Please ensure your child has the time to complete these pages and it is really helpful if you can go through their learning with them. The children will also have 2, 5 and 10 times tables to learn this term.

Uniform and P.E. kit

All children are expected to wear the correct South Rise school uniform including black shoes.  School jumpers can be purchased at the school office. Children will be doing P.E. twice a week as part of their school learning. We would prefer they bring their kit to school on a Monday and take it home on a Friday. For P.E. children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirt and trainers/plimsolls.

Please see the class teacher if you would like to help out with activities in school. Our reading volunteers provide a fantastic opportunity for many of our children to enjoy extra one to one reading. This makes a big difference to the children’s progress and self-confidence.

Many thanks for your support!

To learn more about our sporting hero, Laura (Trott) Kenny, we visited the Lee Valley Velopark. We saw the very track where she won her two gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics. We were very fortunate to see cyclists on the track. One even rode very high up on the steep corner to high five some children!
