Year 2

Summer 1 - 2017

Welcome back!

We hope you all enjoyed your holidays and spending time relaxing with family and friends. We are looking forward to the new term and we have begun our brilliant new topic:  Swings and Roundabouts.

Unit of Learning:  Swings and Roundabouts

It’s a Science-based Unit of Learning this term, and we’re very excited about it.  We will be learning about the different forces that move us and the things in our world.  The children already know a lot about gravity, but why doesn’t a roundabout spin forever?  We have so many questions to explore!

Our focus text this term is Fortunately, the Milk… by the multi-award winning author, Neil Gaiman.  The story is imaginative and adventurous and more than a little bit dangerous.  It is available in local libraries, if you’d like to read along with us.

Central Idea:  Understanding the nature of forces, allows people to make practical applications.

Home Learning

We believe reading at home is an important way of supporting your child with their learning at school. We recommend that children read to an adult every evening for about ten minutes. Please also ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day so they are able to take a range of books home at their book band level.  We will provide information about your child’s reading progress and invite you to add your own comments. Spellings will be sent home each week.

Uniform and P.E. kit

Kindly remember that children are expected to wear the correct South Rise school uniform including simple, black shoes.  Boots are not part of the school uniform.  Also, shaved designs into hair, colourful hair dyes and decorative hair accessories are not permitted.

Children will be doing P.E. twice a week as part of their school learning and they are required to change their clothes. For P.E. children should wear black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, plain white t-shirt and trainers/plimsolls. We would prefer they bring their kit to school on a Monday and take it home on a Friday. This avoids disappointment when children have to miss out.

Sincere thanks for your continued support!

Year Two had a marvellous World Book Day. We all enjoyed dressing up as our favourite characters. The day began with some book sharing with our parents and friends.

To learn more about our sporting hero, Laura (Trott) Kenny, we visited the Lee Valley Velopark. We saw the very track where she won her two gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics. We were very fortunate to see cyclists on the track. One even rode very high up on the steep corner to high five some children!
